Michael Born – Environmental Practice Administrator
Mike brings a strong environmental background to his role as counselor for energy and electric generation organizations, manufacturers, and mining companies. With 30 years of experience, he has participated in and represented clients through regulatory development and enforcement trends throughout multiple administrations at both state and federal levels. This, paired with his work as a young lawyer developing and influencing the implementation of significant regulatory programs that have since become the current regulatory scheme for Ohio industry, enables him to effectively and efficiently represent clients in a variety of regulatory development, compliance, and related litigation issues. These include substantial experience in air, solid waste, and hazardous waste environmental compliance matters.
Cheri Budzynski
With a strong background in environmental compliance, regulatory compliance, OSHA, and permitting, Cheri represents clients in a broad range of industries, including industrial, manufacturing, and agribusiness.
A management-side attorney for more than 10 years, Cheri counsels clients on day-to-day environmental compliance and other administrative issues at their facilities. Clients draw on the fact she frequently works with Ohio EPA, U.S. EPA, and the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission regarding environmental regulations, thus, allowing her to effectively and efficiently, advise clients on regulations on both the state and federal level and seek changes to regulations that impact their business by providing input to the regulatory agencies and, if necessary, appealing the regulations.
Doug Haynam
Clients turn to Doug for his thorough and comprehensive understanding of the environmental landscape as it applies to compliance and enforcement matters. He has a broad range of experience in environmental and administrative law, including environmental compliance, litigation, consultation, and civil and criminal enforcement matters. His unique experience in addressing the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and state hazardous and solid waste issues, as well as Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) cleanups gives him valuable perspective on regulatory complexities.

Partnering closely with his clients, Mark brings a strategic approach to his practice and helps clients put their legal questions in context to develop comprehensive and sensible resolutions. He advises clients on various environmental, health, and safety matters.
Marcus Miller
Marcus has come up through the ranks of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP where he now practices in the Litigation practice group of our Columbus office. He spent four years working for Shumaker full time while attending law school at night. Marcus brings a high level of dependable dedication to his work and to each client, which ranges from large telecommunications companies and manufacturers to small businesses and individuals. He handles all aspects of litigation and works on cases involving a variety of legal issues, including breach of contract, personal injury, and environmental liability. He has also worked on collections matters and evictions.
Mike O’Callaghan
Mike specializes in environmental law, workplace health and safety matters, and real property litigation. He has extensive experience in representing clients in all aspects of environmental law, including compliance and defense of enforcement proceedings. He also regularly represents clients in a variety of commercial transactions involving environmental issues, including due diligence in mergers and acquisitions and brownfield redevelopment projects. Mike advises employers on workplace health and safety compliance and represents employers in OSHA proceedings. He also has significant experience involving real property litigation, including environmental and commercial landlord/tenant disputes.
Joe Simpson
Joe has extensive experience in environmental law, including litigation and regulatory counseling regarding environmental matters relating to air, water, solid and hazardous waste, pesticides, underground storage tanks and environmental indemnity
He has represented Fortune 500 clients concerning compliance in Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and other matters. Additionally, Joe has extensive experience in environmental indemnity litigation.
Mike Snyder
Mike’s litigation experience includes representation of manufacturers, energy companies, commercial landlords, and franchisors in all aspects of commercial and business litigation. He has experience successfully handling a wide variety of complex litigation matters, including business and franchise disputes; environmental litigation under the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act; regulatory disputes and challenges to administrative regulations and statutes, commercial real estate disputes, tort cases, and workplace safety actions. Mike has successfully represented individuals; small businesses, large corporations, and nonprofit entities in federal and state courts and before a wide variety of state and federal administrative agencies and adjudicatory bodies, including the U.S. Environmental Appeals Board; Ohio Environmental Review Commission; Ohio EPA; Ohio Liquor Control Commission; Ohio Department of Agriculture; Ohio Unemployment Compensation Review Commission; Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, and the Industrial Commission of the State of Ohio.
Louis Tosi
Lou has substantial experience in the areas of environmental law, administrative law, and litigation. Lou is the former Chair of the firm’s Environmental Practice Group and is a former member of the firm’s management committee.
Lou has extensive experience in representing companies in matters before the United States and Ohio Environmental Protection Agencies. He also regularly represents a number of industry groups in a variety of rulemaking settings and CERCLA matters. He has substantial experience in class actions and complex litigation, as well as CERCLA, RCRA, the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act.
